Written by the head priest at a Buddhist Zen Temple, this book has 100 lessons to live a less stressful, mor mindful life. By doing one lesson per day for 100 days you can bring yourself true happiness and calm.

If you’ve started a new crafty hobby recently and are less than thrilled with the results, then The Beauty of Everyday Things will give you a new perspective on your handmade goods. Written by Soetsu Yanagi who founded and was the first director of the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum, this book offers insight into the value – both aesthetic and sentimental – of simple handmade objects.

The Penguin Book of Japanese Verse is ideal for those wanting a greater insight into Japanese poetry and poetic forms. With forewords and appendices by Professor Geoffrey Bownas – who created the Department of Japanese Studies at Oxford University – and Anthony Thwaite, who was awarded an OBE for services to poetry and has lectured at prestigious universities in Japan and all over the world. The book contains poems from the likes of Yamabe Akahito and Tanikawa Shuntarō, as well as many Emperors, Princes and Princesses – as Japan is the only country in the world where the head of state was required to write poems.

Finally, if you are interested in Japanese aesthetics and the differences between Japanese society and western society In Praise of Shadows is the book for you. Written by Junichiro Tanizaki, a celebrated playwright and novelist, it draws parallels between Japanese society and shadow, and western society and light. Exploring topics such as art, architecture and food, Tanizaki provides his observations and insights, which are still relevant almost 100 years after he wrote them.

Whatever your interests, I’m sure you’ll find these books interesting and insightful!
