What is HARU Tape?

Written by Sophie, May 2021
If you’ve visited NishuraEast before then you’ve probably seen pictures of our HARU tape – pictures of rolls that come in so many colours and sizes. But what actually is HARU tape, and what is it used for? Well the quick answer is that it's washi tape, a Japanese paper tape that was only invented in 2006. It has a papery texture, comparable to masking tape and can be torn from the roll. But HARU is washi tape, like you’ve never seen it before. Where typical washi tapes come in rolls with a width of about 10-15mm, intended for use in notebooks or journals, HARU comes in four sizes – 50mm, 150mm, 300mm and 600mm. These are designed for decorating walls and furniture, creating art and murals, and generally colouring the space you live in. HARU has been featured at the London Design Fair, and has been written about in publications such as design-milk.com, Elle Decoration, Real Homes and the Telegraph. Earlier this year HARU stuck-on design won the 2021 German Design award in the category “Excellent Architecture”. This makes it perfect for children to use to decorate their rooms, or for renters who want to liven up their spaces. HARU tape is also an ideal medium for artists, as you can peel and re-stick as many times as you need to perfect your project. In fact we have collaborated with a number of artist to decorate the NishuraEast showroom in London. There is also a range of PET (that’s polyethylene terephthalate) tape that’s designed for use on floors. The PET tape is a glossy, plastic tape that doesn’t stretch or tear – perfect for bathrooms or high traffic areas. The strong adhesive ensures that it stays in place through whatever you throw at it. There is also OPP (oriented polypropylene) tape, a transparent tape with bold black designs that can be bought from our site by the metre. This looks great layered over the bright colours of the HARU washi tape. The HARU washi tape is available in 48 colours, which are separated into 8 colour families. This gives you a great idea of which colours go together, but of course you can mix and match all the colours, to create art that is uniquely you. We are also able to provide HARU stuck on design in large quantities for commercial use, just contact us here and we’ll be in touch.   There really is so much you can create with HARU stuck-on design. The only limit is your imagination!
