Wasanbon is a traditional Japanese sweets, made with Japanese sugarcane, produced in Kagawa. Unlike mass-produced white sugar, Wasanbon undergoes an intricate refining process involving repeated kneading and washing to remove impurities. This labour-intensive method results in a uniquely fine texture and a delicate sweetness that is highly prized in Japanese confectionery.

It is a staple in tea ceremonies, where its subtle sweetness balances the bitterness of matcha. Beyond traditional uses, Wasanbon is paired with beverages like coffee, tea, and cocktails, adding a refined, mellow sweetness.

Its flavour is mild and complex, and it melts effortlessly on the tongue, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Choose between four beautifully designed options:

  • The elegant winter landscape collection, adorned with emblems of the white hare and decorated with a snowy landscape on its paper box.
  • The Fuji scenery collection represents Hyakkei- Japan’s 100 views of fuji boxed with a special centered wasanbon etched with Mount Fuji on it with the cool blue tones covering the box.
  • Autumn Plum blossom set includes a collection of season flowers for the colder months.  Adorned in seasonal and festive packaging.

  • Children's festival honours Japan’s Children’s Day (5th May), featuring koi-nobori (koi fish streamers) symbols. The koi fish represent strength and perseverance, embodying hopes for children’s bright futures.

How to care

Typically sold in wooden boxes or as beautifully crafted sweets, Wasanbon is best stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to maintain its texture and prevent clumping.
